This book shines a long‑overdue spotlight on the Afro–Puerto Rican rhythms that have shaped the island’s cultural soul yet were too often pushed to the margins. Bringing together nearly nineteen distinct rhythmic traditions, it celebrates the artists, communities, and histories that kept these sounds alive across generations.
More than a catalog, this work opens the door to creative possibility. We show how iconic Bomba and Plena rhythms can be reimagined within jazz, funk, rock, and other Afro‑diasporic genres—especially through the expressive power of the drum set. Musicians, educators, and creators will find fresh inspiration in the fusion of tradition and innovation.
To deepen the experience, the book is paired with a rich suite of educational materials: performance videos, audio examples, and written guides that break down each rhythm step‑by‑step. These resources illuminate not only how to play the rhythms, but also the historical forces and cultural stories that shaped Bomba, Plena, and the communities that carried them forward.
This is more than a reference—it’s an invitation to explore, learn, and bring these powerful Afro‑Puerto Rican traditions into new musical worlds.
The Book is Bilingual (Spanish and English)
